Course Description

This is the first semester of a yearlong seminar designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. In this seminar, we will study the law and politics of constitution-making through film. We will watch movies about the constitution-making processes in Zimbabwe in 2013, Iceland in 2008, Japan post WWII, the ill-fated Weimar Republic that gave way to the Third Reich, and the United States.Themes that we’ll address across all these different settings include: (1) whether the process of constitution-making is important, (2) whether inclusivity and participation matters, (3) the ingredients for success and failure post-adoption, among others. We will assign some readings beforehand but will watch the movies in class.
