UVA Law Symposium to Assess 'Game-Changing' Nature of JOBS Act on Businesses, Law
An upcoming symposium at the University of Virginia School of Law will bring together experts in corporate law, academia, venture capital, angel investing and crowd funding to discuss the potential business and legal ramifications of the Jumpstart Our Business Start-Ups Act. (Full schedule)
"Game Changer: The Impact of the JOBS Act," presented by the Virginia Law & Business Review, will be held Friday, April 5, in Caplin Pavilion on the first anniversary of the signing of the JOBS Act.
The JOBS Act, which passed Congress with bipartisan support, encourages the funding of small businesses by easing various securities regulations.
"The JOBS Act has to the potential to drastically alter the landscape of capital formation. It enables crowd funding, eases the ability of a small company to go public and allows entrepreneurs to advertise to the general public to gain investors," said second-year law student and conference organizer Victoria P. Morphy, editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law & Business Review. "Understanding the JOBS Act will be crucial for lawyers, investors, regulators and entrepreneurs, which makes this topic timely and broadly relevant."
The conference, sponsored with the Law School's John W. Glynn, Jr. Law & Business Program and the Initiative for Business in Society ("IBiS") at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, will feature keynote speaker Roel Campos. Campos, a former commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission, is currently a partner at Locke Lord, where he serves as the firm's national chair of securities regulation and enforcement.
Panels at the event will discuss investor perspectives on the act, the law's impact on entrepreneurs and business owners, and the most important components of the legislation.
