Course Description

In this course, students are prepared for work in the trial court and for the atmosphere of the courtroom. Students will be given the opportunity to perform many of the functions of trial lawyers, such as direct and cross examinations, opening statements, presentation of exhibits, impeachment and rehabilitation and dealing with expert witnesses. In the middle of the semester, each student will be counsel in a mini mock trial. At the end of the semester, each student will be counsel in a full mock jury trial. The class is taught by two circuit court judges, who have extensive trial experience. Upon completion of the course, students will have extensive experience appearing before two judges.

Written Work Product

Trial element simulations (direct exam, cross exam, openings/closing, objections); participation as individual or co-counsel for full mock trial. A brief (5 pages or less) pre-trial motion may be required prior to final trial (submitted directly to instructors, not via EXPO).
