Course Description

This is a 1-term version of the seminar designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. This seminar examines the use of law as a form of conflict resolution and compares it to other forms, whether peaceful or violent, formal or informal, promising or problematic. What assumptions about human nature underlie these different forms of resolving conflict? And what moral demands do they impose on those involved in them? Does legal training or practice affect how one thinks about these questions? Texts may include the films Judgment at Nuremberg, Just Mercy, Do the Right Thing, Rashomon, and Matewan.
