Course Description

This course builds on work undertaken in the introductory Decarceration and Community Reentry Clinic, giving students an opportunity to progress in litigation, policy, and community education projects.

Written Work Product

Students will be expected to take on a greater role in working directly with clients and partner groups, working on in-house clinic cases, community education projects, and policy advocacy. Depending on the specific project, students will prepare petitions, prepare legislative testimony, or produce self-help guides.

Other Work

Students will also take shifts staffing a help-line hosted by the Charlottesville based Reentry Program, Home to Hope, where they will work 1:1 with currently incarcerated and formerly incarcerated clients to address reentry barriers.

Prerequisites: (Decarceration and Community Reentry Clinic (8657)) It is preferred for students to be qualified to have 3rd year practice certificate, but not required. Also, because the credits in this course count toward the JD Program Professional Skills requirement, JD candidates will be given enrollment priority for this class Concurrencies: None
